Brussels
Brussels is a city with a rich historic
past, at the very heart of the city lies the Grand Place,
arguably the most beautiful square in Northern Europe,
with its wonderfully ornate 17th century guild houses
and relaxing pavement cafes. On your romantic break
away perhaps begin at the Grand Place for a taste of
Brussels grandeur, before moving on through the narrow,
Baroque streets to pay a visit to the irreverent little
statue of the Mannekin Pis, before heading to the wonderful
collections in the many fine art museums scattered around
the city. Follow this up with a great (and expensive
if you can afford it) spending spree for your loved
one.
Shops in Brussels are generally open from Monday
to Friday and on Saturday morning although some of the
more tourist shops will open over the weekend. Look
out for Belgian lace, crystal glassware and those mouth-watering
handmade chocolates. By now you will most definitely
have worked up an appetite, which is perfect timing
to sample the great variety of cuisines. The cosmopolitan
mix of the city is reflected in its choice of restaurants,
with everything from French and Flemish specialities
to excellent Greek, Italian or Scandinavian cuisine.
You can choose from a good value meal to the finest
gourmet specialities. The streets around the Grand Place
such as the rue des Bouchers, are full of atmosphere
and choice of eateries, or head for Ste Catherine and
the old fish market where the locals enjoy the gourmet
fish restaurants.
