Earl
of Bute (1762)
- Prime Minister - Parliament
John Stuart was the son
of the second Earl of Bute and born in 1713. In
1760 George succeeded his grandfather, George
II, as king. A year later Bute was invited to
become Prime Minister in an attempt to break up
Whig power. Many people believed that Bute was
attempting to extend monarchical powers and following
a series of demonstrations against him in 1763,
he resigned.
Stuart during a debate on the cider tax:
"A noble duke knows the difficulty to choose
