Andrew
Bonar Law (1922-3)
- Prime Minister - Parliament
Andrew Bonar Law was born
in 1858 in Canada but moved to Scotland. He joined
the Conservative party and served under Balfour.
When Balfour resigned Bonar Law became the new
leader of the Conservatives. He progressed further
under Asquith and Lloyd George until he became
the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Despite poor
health he agreed to become Prime Minister for
a short while after Lloyd George but his deteriorating
condition forced him to resign.
"If I am a great man, then a good many great
men of history are frauds"
"The [present Liberal Government] have turned
the House of Commons into an exchange where everything
is bought and sold. In order to retain for a little
longer the ascendancy of their party, to remain
a few months longer in office, they have sold
the Constitution, they have sold themselves"
