Manchester
For the millennium Manchester
has revitalised itself. Now there is a mixture of old
with the new. And the modern buildings combine with
the Victorian architecture. Rising from the revived
docklands at Salford Quays The Lowry, which houses the
largest collections of L S Lowry paintings opened in
spring 2000, The Royal Exchange theatre has reopened
its doors showing off its renewed main auditorium, The
Bridgewater Hall, home to the Halle Orchestra sits next
to the Midland Crowne Plaza Hotel in perfect harmony.
As the city is mad on shopping,
socialising and sports the collection of 19th century
public buildings and churches fit nicely in this changing
city. As Manchester has its pavements filled with cafes,
tapas, canalside bars, noodle and sushi joints along
with the Curry Mile of Rusholme and the talent up and
coming chefs in restaurants have turned Manchester into
a cosmopolitan delight.
The city is filled with excitement
and its not surprising with the 2002 Commonwealth Games
was held in Manchester and to add to the excitement
of the city being re-born.
Also on the small screen, Manchester
has made a name for itself. With the television dramas
of Sherlock Holmes and The Politician’s Wife been
filmed in the city, the popular television series of
Cold Feet shot in Bridgewater Hall, Queer as Folk that
was filmed in the bright and dynamic Canal Street area.
Also with the film John Schlesinger’s Yanks, Warren
Beattie’s Reds, Brassed Off, 24 Hour Party People
and East is East all being filmed in Manchester.
Liverpool
All over the world Liverpool is
referred to as the Beatles. As they made the city so
famous. Even its airport has been named after John Lennon
(Liverpool John Lennon Airport). Putting the Beatles
aside the Walker Art Gallery also brings people to Liverpool
as its known world–wide. And is one of eight National
Museums and Galleries on Merseyside.
To with the Walker Art Gallery
is the Tate Gallery Liverpool and the Lady Lever Gallery
at Port Sunlight with its British paintings make Liverpool’s
art collection amazing.
In this city is The Conservation
Centre, which is the latest addition to the National
Museums and Galleries of Merseyside, showing us the
world of museum and gallery conservation.
The city turns into a beautiful
sight at night time when the light shines down onto
the gorgeous architecture and around the Liver Birds.
And it is a great time to go to the theatre, explore
the waterfront of the Albert Dock where there are restaurants
and bars a plenty to entertain you or go to the opera.
Outside of London the North West
is the home of the largest production centre for films
and television shows. With the flicker of cinematic
films that go back to 1896, when the earliest known
moving picture was Lumieres, shot in Liverpool. The
city has then go on to be Russia in Barbara Striesland’s
Yentil and The Hunt for Red October, as Paris for David
Putmans Chariots of Fire even as London for In the Name
of The Father, Hilary and Jackie and Beautiful People.
But Liverpool has also been itself in the films like
Backbeat and The 51st State.
Lancaster
Lancaster is rich in history from
when it was a trading port in Georgian times, when it
would receive cargoes from the West Indies of rum, ginger
and spices. To have a look back at this time in the
city’s history the Maritime Museum on St Georges
Quay gives you the opportunity to do this. Also there
is the Maritime Festival is a great way to relive that
time.
Lancaster also prides itself on
having an amazing Norman Castle, which in the 17th century
the infamous Pendle Witches were imprisoned and it offers
you the chance to experience the history of that time.
Preston
Her Majesty the Queen has bestowed the honour of City
Status on Preston. And it is for the character of Preston’s
community, ancient history and regional importance,
progressiveness and perspective.
Preston is found in the middle of Lancashire, with its
history that dates back to the Doomsday Book in 1080.
And the granting of the first Charter by Henry II in
1779 that gave the right to hold a Guild Merchant and
the 20 year tradition continues to this day. The next
one will be in 2012.
There are the attractions of the Harris Museum and Art
Gallery, The Museum of the Queen’s Lancashire
Regiment, The museum of Lancashire. And the National
Football Museum at Preston North End’s Football
home ground , Deepdale.
Lancashire’s other towns
and cities are Warrington and Bolton.
