Career
highlights
After appearing in several England
squads, Danny finally made the
breakthrough in November when
he was capped as a substitute
in the Sweden friendly at Old
Trafford (drew 1-1). He already
had 5 caps at Under-21 level.
This versatile player signed for
Liverpool from Crewe Alexandra
for a £1.5 million fee in
1997 and at first struggled to
make his mark amongst a competitive
and established midfield. At one
stage, Danny returned to Crewe
on a loan spell at the end of
the 1998/9 season and it appeared
that his Liverpool days were numbered.
However,
under the tutelage of Liverpool
manager Gerard Houllier, he has
become a rejuvenated player finally
living up to his early potential
in the Liverpool midfield alongside
Steven Gerrard. Danny has also
added a lethal long-range shooting
ability to his repertoire, which
has seen him score some spectacular
goals in the last couple of seasons,
including a memorable 30-yard
shot which secured Liverpool victory
over Manchester United at Old
Trafford last season. |
