Profile
Used
The Ryder Cup as the platform to prove conclusively
that his powers remain undiminished in his 40th
year. In much the same way as he received unstinting
praise for his leadership qualities on and off
the golf course at the 1999 Ryder Cup, in which
he accrued three and a half points, Montgomerie
was the outstanding competitor at The De Vere
Belfry in 2002. Beat Scott Hoch 5 and 4 to maintain
unbeaten record in six Ryder Cup singles and
was top points scorer in either side with four
and a half out of five. Born in Scotland, raised
in Yorkshire where father, James, was a company
director.
Attended Houston Baptist University. Father
retired as Royal Troon secretary in 1997. Lost
out in play-off for 1994 US Open Championship,
and runner-up again to Ernie Els in 1997. Also
defeated in sudden-death by Steve Elkington
for the US PGA title in 1995. Attended investiture
ceremony at Buckingham Palace in November 1998
to receive MBE from Her Majesty The Queen. Won
six times in 1999 to claim his seventh successive
Volvo Order of Merit crown. Won the Ericsson
Masters at the start of 2001 to capture his
first title Down Under and claimed his first
in Asia when, one week after sharing the 2002
Volvo Masters Andalucia with Bernhard Langer
in the season ending event at Valderrama – his
27th European title – he won the TCL Classic
in China.
