Premiership
Newcastle United
Newcastle was founded in 1881 and turned professional
in 1889. In Newcastle United league history
they have never been out of the top divisions
since they were nominated to division 2 in 1893.
And at the turn of the century the club won
3 titles and 5 FA Cup finals, winning one in
1910.
Since then Newcastle has only had one title
arrive at St. James Park in 1927 even though
the FA Cup has had five more triumphs, with
the last in 1955. Although the club has produced
great players, with the likes of Chris Waddle,
Peter Beardsley, Malcolm MacDonald and Paul
Gascoigne, the recent times have been the very
best of times for the Toon army after spending
two hard periods in Division 2.
In 1982 saw Kevin Keegan arrive as a player
within two years Newcastle were back in Division
1, and five seasons only gave the club a best
finish of 5th place and in 1989 they went back
down into Division 2.
Kevin Keegan then returned to the club in February
1992, only this time he was manager. And he
had the hard job of keeping Newcastle in Division
2 and he built up a team that would challenge
the big guns.
In 1993 they were promoted
and in their Premiership seasons have produced
some high finishes but still no success yet.
Newcastle plays at St.
James Park in which they have played here since
1892- with the ground capacity of 52,218.
The club has a record
transfer paid of 15m for Alan Shearer to Blackburn
Rovers in July 1996, record transfer received
of 8m for Dieter Harmann from Liverpool in July
1999 and a League Scoring record of 36 goals
by Hughie Gallacher in League Division 1 in
19926-27.
The clubs star players are Alan Shearer, Laurent
Robert, Shola Ameobi, Gary Speed, Kieron Dyer,
Nolberto Solano and Jermaine Jenas.
