Italian Football
Inter Milan
On 9th March 1908 Football
Club Internazionale Milano was formed by a group
of rebels. It was these rebels that allowed
foreign players as well as Italians to play
i.e. Internazionale. The clubs first captain
was Swiss player Hernst Manktl. The clubs colours
are gold, black and blue, which have even been
kept to the present day.
Two years later in 1910
Inter wins the Italian League for the first
time. This championship team was captained by
Virgilio Fossati, who then died in the World
War I several years later. This team even won
their second title without him in 1920.
During the 1930 a lot
happened with the club. For in 1930 during the
Fascist era the club had to merge with the Milanes
Unione Sportiva and the team win its third Scudetto
under the name of Ambrosiana Inter.
In 1934 the Italian national
team won the World Cup in Rome with Nerazzurri
Allemandi, Castellazzi, Demaria and the great
Giuseppe Meaza coming from the Inter team. Also
two years later in the Berlin Olympics Frossi
and Locatelli win the gold medals.
Ferraris II, Farrari,
Locatelli and Meazza are the Ambosiana players
that are involved in the Azzurri set up in which
the team wins the world Cup of 1938 in Paris.
Whilst in the same year Inter Milan win their
fourth Scudetto, but he clubs first Coppa Italia
victory doesn’t come until 1939
In the 1940s the club
wins another tile. And the team name of Ambrosiana
is discarded in October of 1945 after that the
club used its previous name of Inter.
In 1947 saw Giuseppe Maezza play his last of
his 408 official matches for Inter. The Inter
striker has the legend status with his 287 goals
for the club, he later died in 1979 and the
San Siro stadium is named in his honour a year
later.
In 1953 the Nerazzurri
win their sixth Scudetto and they win it again
in the following year with the help of the great
player of Italian Benito “Veleno”
Lorenzi, Swede Skoglund, Dutchman Wilkes and
the stateless Nyers.
In 1963 saw the “Great
Inter” era start. In which the club president
was Angelo Moratti, coach Helenio Herrera and
the line up was Sarti, Burgnich, Facchetti,
Bedin, Guarneri, Picch, Jair, Mazzola, Milani
(Domenghini), Suarrez and Corso. This great
team won Serie A titles three successive title
in a row – 1964, 1965 and 1966 with the
last one being the tenth Scudetto which allowed
the club to wear the one gold star on their
shirts. The club also won two European Cups
in 1964 against Real Madrid and against Benfica
in 1965, two Intercontinental Cups in 1964 and
1965 both of which were against Argentine side
Independiente.
1964 saw Suarez win the European championship
with the Spanish national team.
Also in the 1960s with
the help of Burgnich, Facchetti, Domenghini,
Mazzola and Guarneri help the Italian national
team’s victory in the 1968 European championship
in Rome. Then three years later the Nerazzurri
won their eleventh Scudetto under the coach
Gianni Invernizzi.
In the 1980s Inter won
the Serie A title in 1980 and in Madrid in 1982
Italy win the World Cup with the help of Altobelli,
Bordon, Marini, Oriali and Bergomi from Inter
Milan.
1989 saw Inter win their thirteenth Scudetto
and accumulating a record 58 points from 34
matches (two points for a win). Then a year
later Brehme, Matthaeus and Klinsman the German
trio win the World Cup in Rome at Italia ’90.
Also in the same year Lothar Matthaeus becomes
the first Inter player to attain the European
Player of the Year award.
Then on 2nd May 1991 Inter beat Roma 2-1 on
aggregate in the UEFA Cup final. And they won
their second UEFA Cup final three years later
when they beat Salzburg.
In 1998 saw Ronaldo become
the first Inter player to win the FIFA World
Player award and only the second to win the
Ballon d’Or. Inter also miss out on the
Scudetto after a hard duel with Juventus, even
though they did beat Lazio 3-0 in Paris to win
the UEFA Cup for the third time.
On 12th April 2000 saw
Ronaldo injured during the Coppa Italia final
against Lazio. Ronaldo named the “phenomenon”
returns to the pitch in 2001-02 season and scores.
Whilst at the same time Nerazzurri defender
Laurent Blanc was apart of the French team that
beat Italy in the Euro 2000 final.
Most recently Inter overtake
AC Milan to finish fifth in Serie A championship.
And in the summer a “Ronaldo Day”
is held to celebrate his Ronaldo or the Phenomenon’s
return to competitive football. And in November
one of Inter’s most legendary players,
the great Giacinto Facchetti is made the vice
president of the Beneamata Avv, Giuseppe Prisco
passes away two days after his eightieth birthday.
In 2002 Inter came close to winning their fourteenth
Scudetto. They went into the last match of the
season one point over Juventus, while Roma beat
Inter into second place. Like what happened
in 1967 when in the last match of the championship
is fatal to the Nerazzurri.
Inter Milan play their
matches at the San Siro Stadium which has the
capacity of 85,700.
The star players at Inter
Milan are Christian Vieri, Julio Ricardo, Marco
Materazzi, Alvaro Recoba, Andy Van der Meyde,
Fabio Cannavaro, Francisco Javier Farinos, Daniele
Adani and Obafemi Martins.
Inter Milan hope to finish
the season within the top five of the Serie
A and hopes to feature in the Italian titles
by reaching or winning the finals. Inter Milan
also hope to qualify for next season UEFA Champions
League in which they hope to progress further.
