Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund was
formed in 1909. And the clubs first major success
came in the 1926-27 season when they reached
their highest point, even though they were relegated
the following season. In 1935 sees August Lenz
is the first player from BVB in Germany’s
national team.
In which he made a total of 14 appearances.
1936 sees August Lenz be the first player from
BVB to take part in the Olympic Games Berlin.
He was in the team that lost 0-2 to Norway.
Also in this year BVB reach Westphalia’s
highest division and play first class football.
In 1947 Borussia Dortmund
wins the Westphalia championship beating FC
Schalke 3-2 which is the end of Schalke’s
run. The team that day included names like Kronsbein,
Ruhmhofer and Koschmieder. In 1949 BVB lose
to VfR Mannheim 2-3 in the last match of the
season in Stuttgart.
In the 1950s saw BVB goalkeeper
Heinrich Kwiatkowski be the first Borusse to
take part in the final rounds of the World Cup
in Switzerland. This saw him become world champion
with the appearance in the match against Hungary
a 3-8 defeat in the preliminary rounds. And
in the seasons of 1956 and 1957 BVB were consecutive
German champions with the same team. In the
next year Borussia took part in the European
Cup Winner’s Cup for the first time.
In the 1960s Borussia Dortmund became vice champions
in 1961 as they lost to Nuremberg 0-3. Then
two years later in 1963 they were the last German
champions of the ‘old era’ beating
FC Cologne 3-1. In 1966 saw Lothar Emmerich,
Siegfried Held, Wolfgang Paul and Hans Tilkowski
play in the World Cup finals in England. Emmerich
Held and Tilkowski are in the losing side as
a result of the 2-4 defeat to England.
In the 1970s saw Borussia
Dortmund take two good triumphs in 1972 against
FC Nuremberg 1-0 and 3-2. This Brings Dortmund
back into the Bundesliga. The main point for
Borussia Dortmund came in 1989 when they won
the Cup. The club dominates the Werder Bremen,
4-1 and win the clubs second DFB Cup. The club
then goes on to win the Super Cup beating Bayern
Munich 3-2 in the final. The team included Kroth,
Dickel, Mill and Moller.
From 1993 to 1998 saw
Borussia Dortmund’s under 17 be German
champions in 1993, 1996 and 1998 and the clubs
under 19 team be German champions in 1994 to
1998 as well. In 1995 and 1996 Borussia Dortmund
are the two time German Champions, Winning in
1995 by beating Monchengladbach 1-0 in the following
year with penalty kick against Kaiserslautern
which saw the match end 5-4 ( 1-1 after extra
time). 1997 saw Borussia Dortmund win the Champions
League by beating Juventus Torino 3-1 at the
Olympic stadium in Munich. Also in December
of the same year in Tokyo in the World Cup for
clubs tournament BVB beats Belo Horizonte 2-0.
In more recent years Borussia
Dortmund become the German Champions for the
sixth time in May 2002. After the German Championship
which was closely fought out between Borussia
Dortmund, FC Bayern Munich and Bayern Leverkusen.
The trophy was lifted by the Stefan Reuter,
BVB captain.
Borussia Dortmund plays
at Westfalenstadion which has a ground capacity
of 69,000 spectators.
The key players for Borussia
Dortmund are Conceicao, Evanilson, Juan Ramon
Fernandez, Torsten Frings, Salvartore Gambino,
Stefan Reuter, Lars Ricken, Tomas Rosicky, Marcio
Amoroso, Ewerthon and Jan Koller.
The club hopes to finish
the season within the top ten or top three of
the Bundesliga with the chance of getting to
and winning a few titles this season.
