Nationwide Division One Football



Wigan athletic were in the English Fourth Division from the 1978-79 season to 1982-83. It was in the 1982-93 season that the club had a good run of form and gained promotion into the English Third Division until 1986-87 season when they finished fourth but gained promotion to the Barclays Third Division.

Here in the Barclays Third Division for the first time in 1987-88. The club finishes in the places ranging from 18th to 7th. IN 1992-93 when they were in the Barclays League Division Two the club had a bad season and finished in 23rd place. This meant that they were relegated to the Endsleigh League Division Three.

From 1996-97 season the club has fought hard to get back into the top part of the first division football. Working their way through the Nationwide Division Two. Until finally at the end of the 2002-03 season when they came in 1st place, had won the right to be promoted to the Nationwide Division One.
Now in the current season of 2003-04 the club is at present at 6th position.

Wigan Athletic play their football at the JJB Stadium which has the capacity of 25000.
The star players at Wigan Athletic are Nathan Ellington, Andy Liddell, Geoff Horsfield, Lee McCulloch, Jimmy Bullard, Jason de Vos, Jason Jarrett, Matt Jackson, Peter Kennedy and Neil Roberts.
Wigan Athletic hopes to end the season within the top six of the table. With the aim of being in the play-offs and to feature in the titles.
