Car Noises, Diagnosis and Solutions

WHAT IS THAT NOISE!!??!!
I am sure this is familiar to many of us - you are motoring along and you hear a noise.

Where is is coming from?

What can it be? Is it dangerous?

Should I get out and take a look, or keep my head down and hope it goes away?

Here is a rough guide showing some of the sounds you may experience, the possible problem and the solution.

BACKFIRING
Incorrect ignition timing, faulty ignition or leaking valves

Have ignition and/or valves checked.

CLATTER FROM ENGINE
Insufficient engine oil.
Worn or badly adjusted valves.
Insufficient engine oil.
Worn or badly adjusted valves.
WHINING OR CHATTERING FROM ENGINE
Starter motor problem, possibly a stuck gear in the starter.
Refer to a mechanic as soon as possible.
RATTLE WHEN ACCELERATING
Faulty ignition switch, wiring, solenoid or starter motor.
Use higher grade of fuel.
KNOCKING FROM ENGINE WHICH INCREASES WITH ENGINE SPEED
Worn camshaft or cam followers.
Refer to a mechanic.
SCREECH UNDER ACCELERATION
Slipping auxiliary drive belt/fan belt.
Check/adjust belt or have a replacement fitted.
SCREECH WHEN STEERING
Power steering belt slipping.
Check/adjust belt.
MOAN FROM ENGINE WHEN STEERING
Power steering fluid level too low.
Top up power steering fluid level.
ROAR OR RASP UNDER ACCELERATION
Blown exhaust.
Have exhaust checked.
SQUEAL OR GROAN WHEN BRAKING
Worn or defective brake components.
Refer to a mechanic.
HISS FROM ENGINE
Leak from coolant or air/vacuum hoses.
Refer to a mechanic.
CLICKING FROM WHEELS
Loose hubcap;
stone in hubcap, or stone lodged in tyre tread.
Tighten hubcap;
remove stone
