House of Windsor
The House of Windsor came into being in 1917. The name was adopted as the British Royal Family’s official name, from a proclamation by King George V which meant replacing the historic name of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Toady the House of Windsor is the family name of the current Royal Family. The present Queen has family connections with most of the monarchs in Europe.

The Kings and Queens of the Untied Kingdom during the twentieth century have fulfilled many duties of constitutional monarchy. During the world wars of 1914-18 and 1939-45 it was the national figureheads’ role to lift public morale during these devastating times.

Over the last 80 years with the social changes we have seen the modernization of the monarchy. One such modernization that has allowed the Royal Family accessible to a broader public all over the world has been the use of mass communication technologies.

George V made use of the relatively new medium of radio to broadcast across the Empire at Christmas along with other Royal events that have taken place. For at the insistence of The Queen the Coronation ceremony in 1953 was broadcast on television for the first time, and for the past five years the World Wide Web has been used to provide a global audience with information about the Royal Family.

The British monarch have played a part in promoting international relations, retaining ties with former colonies in their role as Head of the Commonwealth.
