Life Expectancy Calculator

This test is based on the basic life expectancy for men living until they are 75 years old and women living until they are 80 years old. Answer the questions below and add or subtract years as instructed to find out your life expectancy.

1. If your Body Mass Index is the same as it was when you were 21 add 10 years. If your BMI is between 25-30 take off 2 years. If your BMI is more than 30 take off 10 years. [if you haven't calaculated your body mass click here]

2.   For each grandparent who is, or lived to be, 80 years or above add one year. For each grandparent who is, or lived to be 70 years or above add half a year.

3. If your mother is, or lived beyond, 80 add 4 years. If your father is, or lived beyond 80 add 2 years.
If your parents are still alive and have not reached this age, do nothing.

4. If a sibling, parent or grandparent died of a heart attack, stroke or arteriosclerosis before 50 take off 4 years. If any of the above family members died between 50 and 60 take off 2 years.

5. If a sibling, grandparent or parent died of diabetes or a peptic ulcer before 60 take off 3 years. If they died of stomach cancer before 60 take off 2 years. Take off 1 year if any of the above family members died of an illness before they were 60.

6. If you are a woman who can't, or does not plan to have children, subtract half a year. If you are a woman and have had more than 7 children take off 1 year.

7. If you are an only child or oldest child add one year.

8. If you smoke more than 40 cigarettes a day take off 12 years. If you smoke 20 - 40 cigarettes take off 7 years. If you smoke less than 20 take off 2 years.

9. If you drink less than 21 units of alcohol/week add 3 years. If you don't drink alcohol regularly add 1.5 years. Heavy drinkers should take off 8 years. If you don't drink alcohol don't add or subtract anything.

10. If you exercise five times a week (including brisk walking) add 5 years.

11. If you have a high fat diet take off 5 years. If you eat mostly grilled food, if you have 5 portions of fruit or veg/day and don't over-eat add 5 years.

12. If you are frequently ill take off 5 years.
