Create an Inground Water Garden

If you've always wanted a water garden, follow these easy steps to installing pond liner. Pond liners are easy to handle and durable. You can shape the liner into a hole of any size and shape. But, before you enjoy, make your measurements first so that you are sure you have the appropriate liner size.

Step 1
Outline the shape of your water garden with a garden hose or string; experiment with the outline by moving the string around and viewing the design from all angles. Make sure you can walk to the water's edge. Once you have the desired shape, size and site, excavate the area, making sure the pond is at least two feet deep. The hole should be six inches wider and three inches deeper than your design.

Step 2

Remove all sharp stones and tree roots from the bottom and sides of the hole. Create a shelf along the perimeter of the pond, 8 to 10 inches below the surface of the soil. This is where your bog plants will sit when the pond is completed.

Step 3
Add a layer of sand (about three inches) to the bottom of the hole. This will provide a cushion for the pond liner.

Step 4
Line the hole with the pond liner and add water.

Step 5
Use a layer of stones to anchor the pond liner in place. Cut the pond liner to fit, leaving extra material to fold over the edging stones.

Step 6
Fold the excess liner over the bottom layer of stones and top with another layer of edging stones. Trim away any excess liner.

Step 7
Let the pond settle a day or two before you add fish and plants.
