SAB-Miller feasts on Atkins diet
THE controversial Atkins diet has been credited with
helping brewing giant SABMiller, the world’s second
largest brewer, record a massive increase in profits.
Followers of the diet replace carbohydrates with
extra protein, and this is being seen as the reason
behind surging sales of the company’s low-carb
Miller Lite beer. The brand now accounts for two thirds
of profits at the US-based Miller operation, and helped
lift annual profits by nearly 50 per cent to £1.07
billion.
It is something of a turnaround for the diet which
has seriously dented the sales of supposedly unassailable
food brands in the past.
Anglo-Dutch consumer goods titan
Unilever felt the pinch last year, blaming Atkins
when sales of its Slim Fast range of low-calorie foods
plummeted.
