In 1964, 29 of the 32 European nations entered the competition
this time with the finals taking place in Spain.
Hosts win
The Soviet Union were there once again – they
comfortably won their semi-final against Denmark 3-0
– and Hungary played and lost to the hosts. Spain
met the Soviet Union in the final, and this time General
Franco allowed the match to proceed. In heavy rain and
in front of 79,115 people in Madrid’s Santiago
Bernabéu Stadium, Spain won 2-1.
