York
York is a great place to
study. With a population of 175,000, York is big
enough to feel cosmopolitan but small enough not
to be overwhelming. It's a friendly city you can
get to know quickly which can still hold surprises
even after 3 years of "hard" study.
There are loads of things
to do culturally, from the Theatre Royal and the
Grand Opera House that offer drama, dance, music
and opera, to the large concert hall at the Barbican
Centre attracts top names in comedy, shows, and
live music - from classical to rock.
There are five main clubs
that have student nights - two with a free bus
from campus. And in fact, York is famed for its
pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes and most of
the cool places in town have live music. There
is nothing better on a Sunday than to sit down
with a paper and a pint and listen to some live
jazz. Alternatively try, afternoon tea at Betty's,
the mouth waters just thinking about it.
Lots of people go round
by bike, and the main University campus is only
10 minutes by bike from the city centre while
King's Manor is just outside the city walls. If
you get bored of the city, Leeds, Bradford and
Scarborough are within an hour's drive, and you
can always go hiking in the Pennines or the Dales.
Great University, great
place to study.
