| Manchester
Most inhabitants
of this city would suggest that it is second only to
London in the number and quality of restaurants. With
defined areas to the city, what food you enjoy depends
where you find yourself. The Dry Bar and Atlas are just
two of the superb café-bars which pepper the
Northern Quarter. High class traditional French cuisine
can be found at its best in Reform. Paul Heathcote,
a Michelin starred chef, brings hearty English fare
to the streets of Manchester with his restaurant Simply
Heathcotes, featuring the likes of roast lamb and thyme,
and chicken and celery soup. Gary Rhodes lends his name
to a restaurant with a similarly traditional take on
food, Rhodes and Co. Other parts of the globe are equally
well represented with the Caribbean gastronomy of Jerk’n’Spice,
and This’n’That stating its case for India.
But, the real gem in Manchester’s crown is Chinatown,
and the assortment of excellent restaurants contained
within. Woo Sang is widely believed to be the oldest
restaurant in Chinatown, and apparently, restaurants
like good wine, get better with age. Pacific Thai and
the New Emperor both embody an established reputation
for excellence in food and service.

of the Month: The Yang Sing
Perhaps the most well known weapon in Manchester’s
arsenal, the Yang Sing has grown from humble beginnings
into what is widely regarded as the best Cantonese restaurant
on the continent. The sheer size of the Yang Sing is
in itself breathtaking, boasting eight floors, and housing
three separate banquet suites. But, no matter how splendid
the building, the food must be up to scratch and it
doesn’t disappoint. All aspects are superb, from
the dim sum to the speciality dishes such as Bamboo
Fungi with Diced Seafood Soup and Chicken with Whole
Black Beans and Spring Onion. How many Cantonese restaurants
do you know that have a specialist wine list and vast
choice of imported Asian beers. The Yang Sing are so
well known that they claim, and probably with good reason,
that they invented the set price banquet meals that
are popular in all Cantonese restaurants. In short,
you won’t find anywhere better in Europe and it
seems that the Yang Sing will maintain going from strength
to strength and continue to receive accolades such as
its award for City Life Restaurant of the Year in 2000.
