Eating Out Hull, Eating Out in Hull

You won’t just be dining out in restaurants, of course. No night out in Hull would be crowned without a visit to the Cottingham road pizza parlours - a line of three pizza shops that managed to an aspiring Pizza Hut branch out of business. No fuss, no worries, just a £3 Pizza. Fat crust or thin, meat feast or veg meal, just put it all on and stay open until 3am! Truly a student institution.

A development for the pizza parlours, however, is the recent outbreak of Subway sandwich takeaways. The competition growing between the two is immense. Never will you eat a better subway than in Hull, as my friend from Walthamstow will tell you. Bear in mind that the retail price is the same as anywhere else, but Hull prices are deflated as hell, so they buy the ingredients at the same price – hence they buy better quality ingredients. Add extended opening hours on weekends – i.e. 24 hours Fri-Sun – and you’ll be proudly contributing towards your five fruit and veg a day.

No guide to eating in Hull would be complete without a quick reflection on eating healthily. For healthy eating – you will consider it when the student lifestyle really begins to kick in and you aren’t being fed by mum every day – Newland Avenue will be your saviour. My personal shopping bill? £11 a week in the butchers for a pound of sausages, a packet of bacon, a pound of mince, a pound of marinated pork stirfry, a pound of pork, a pound of turkey and a pound of steak! Add this nifty deal to your local LIDLs, where peppers, onions, and mushrooms are all under 50p a packet, and you have yourself top-nosh for those cosy nights in.

There are some good cafes too which include McCoy's in the Colonial Chambers serving wraps, sandwiches and pasta across three floors.

Don’t believe people who tell you that you should budget to eat on £15 a week. They lie, have pasty skin and smell funny. Instead, I must ask you, do you not think all this beautiful food is worth the money? Or would you rather blow your loan on that Xbox360 and copious amounts of booze in the first week? If so then consider this – you can, and will, contract scurvy if you eat plain pasta every night for a semester. You won’t read that in the student guide-book.

Hull isn’t the eating out capital of Britain but it does have a number of diners with palatable cuisine. These range from everything Indian, to Italian, Chinese and traditional English food. Most places are reasonably priced and have a comfortable atmosphere. As well as some of the more up market eateries, there are the usual fast food outlets.
