Eating Out Hull, Eating Out in Hull

You’ve arrived at Hull, you’re feeling peckish, and you want my guidance on where to eat? First stop out of Hull station and we’ll take you to Peaberry’s café - a classy sit-down place, with smiling service and juke-box music. Fancy an assortment of inexpensive Tapas with a selection of quality wine? Or maybe a fresh fruit milkshake? Peaberry’s is my obvious choice when entertaining my classier friends, and I recommend it to you, also.

Next on the menu of recommendations is Hitchcocks, a vegetarian buffet restaurant. As a self-glorified carnivore, I must admit I was only attracted to Hitchcocks by its superlative reputation. Once I was filling up my plate with the food of a glorious imagination, however, I stayed for the taste. You should know that the waiters all appear to be local artisans and general scallywags, essential for polite banter when waiting in the queue for seconds and thirds. To supplement to bohemian atmosphere of this softly lit place I recommend you take advantage of bringing your own alcohol.

Those who adore Chinese will salivate when I mention that the self-proclaimed largest Chinese Restaurant in Europe, Mr Chu China Palace, is in Hull. Slightly more expensive than your buffet fare, the food here is gorgeous, as are the views out across the coastline. Or maybe you’ll like the taste of the Indian restaurant Moonlight Tandoori? Let me tell you that being born in the heart of the Bantock Balti triangle in Wolverhampton means I know my curry houses. And this place rates with the best. Beautiful peshawar naans, polite and attentive service, succulent meat - take me here for my birthday!

For other special occasions you should consider the more expensive Turkish restaurant of Mimosa on Beverley Road. Its delicious open kitchen makes waiting for your food a pleasant torment, a chance to savour the floating flavours of a Mediterranean mixed grill. My principle memory of the place, however, is its consistently charismatic service. I’ve taken two girlfriends in there, and the same charming waiter has told me the same fantastical story. ‘My one true love comes from Sydney,’ he said to my Australian lass, ‘I hope to one day go back there one day. Such a beautiful place, wouldn’t you agree?’ And when I took in my girl from London he told me, ‘My one true love comes from Leyton, I hope to one day go back there one day. Such a beautiful place, wouldn’t you agree?’

Not to forget the Venn, in the old town, a modern brasserie restaurant.
