Huddersfield eating out scene

Huddersfield has never been regarded as a must for a great meal, and no one would disagree with that. Fish and chips would be about all it could muster in the past. But this northern town is going though somewhat of a renaissance, begun by the reopening of an old favourite, the Shabab. Since the later seventies, this Indian restaurant was serving wonderful Indian food and waking the appetites of shoppers as the aromas drifted out onto the high street. But, sadly, a fire forced the restaurant into closure in 2000 but now its back and best than ever. Another restaurant which has seen a complete refurbishment is that of the George Hotel. A marvellous old building, in a wonderful setting - the Saint George's square, hosting a statue of Harold Wilson across the road and the train station which itself is a listed building. The hotel greets arrivals at the railway station, it can now boast a lavish Victorian style dining room and a top notch innovative menu. Plus a half price early bird offer should add to its temptation. For those who can’t make up their minds, they should head to Viaduct Street as it offers Cibo, Gringo’s and Balooshai, which will satisfy all lovers of Italian, Mexican and Indian cuisine. Huddersfield's reputation as a growing food town has been further uplifted in recent times with the additiona of a Nando's located right in the centre of town, which has been well received by the local community. There is also another well known restaurant 'Sahib's' due to open in 2008, which gained in popularity after its success in the nearby Bradford.

Britain.tv’s Choice of the Month: Nawaab

The name means ‘Sir’ in Urdu, and after one visit, we are sure that you will feel just that. The restaurant itself looks slightly out of place. Found in an old industrial building, the sharp, stylish sign would suggest it would be in a more cosmopolitan area. Inside Nawaab, the contemporary look is continued with high class tables, clean fresh colours and natural wood surrounding. The food is excellent if slightly predictable Indian fare, however the extra money for the specials is well worth it. Overall, the experience of visiting Nawaab comes highly recommended. A very popular offer is the early bird deal, which is available as long as you arrive before 7pm. This is well worth taking advantage of as it is a 2 for 1 deal.
