SUVs and Trucks Take Over the Road

– Anyone who’s been out driving in the last few years knows light-duty trucks and SUVs have surpassed passenger cars as the vehicle of choice for most Americans.
Although most of us don’t need to haul cargo or tow trailers, we like the space and versatility offered by a larger vehicle. Originally designed as rugged, off-road workhorses, pickups and SUVs are increasingly used to haul the carpool kids and run to the grocery store.

“You can find whatever you need in a truck,” says David Price, owner of Price Lincoln Mercury in Denver, Colo. “They are so utilitarian -- you can tow or haul cargo inside, and yet they can be luxurious and provide plenty of passenger space.”

An added benefit is the safety factor. Not only are SUVs and trucks larger than any passenger car, they also sit higher off the ground providing better visibility. “Once people buy an SUV they usually stick with it. You get used to the safety -- having all that metal around you,” adds Price.

But for those of us who aren’t six feet tall, climbing in and out of one of these vehicles all day could be a challenge. They are so elevated that easy access can be difficult for most normal-size people, not to mention children.

“Most of the new trucks and SUVs are fairly high off the ground,” says Jay Lusignan of Lund International, an automotive accessories company. “Most people need a little help getting in.”

You don’t have to settle for a compact car if you are on the petite side. The problem is easily fixed by adding a running board to your vehicle. One good option is Lund’s new RadStep, a tubular-styled aluminum step covered with a sleek molded end-cap and a rubber non-slip step tread to provide sure footing and great looks. The running board attaches to Lund’s custom-fit EZ-Bracket mounting system and comes in three multi-fit lengths. It has either a textured black or paint-to-match finish and is designed to fit most SUVs, extended cab and crew cab trucks.

“You can find a running board to fit most any vehicle,” says Lusignan. “It will not only make it easier to get in, it enhances the look of your vehicle as well,” he adds.

Running boards come in all styles and sizes. Whatever kind of vehicle you drive, you should be able to find the right fit and match the style. And best of all, you will be able to get into your truck without the aid of a ladder.
