Lakshmi Mittal
Has been the richest Asian in Britain for the last
3 years. Owner of the world’s second largest
steel company, LNM Groups, Mittal’s net worth
stands at approximately £1.310 billion. He began
with his very first state-of-the-art mill in Indonesia,
and has expanded over the years throughout the world,
with plants in Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Canada,
Germany, Ireland and Kazakhstan.
The Jatania Brothers
They were this year’s runners up in the Asian
Xpress Rich List with an estimated value of £570
million. The Brothers head a worldwide cosmetics empire
and have built a fortune selling skin-lightening cosmetics
in Africa, cut-price products and reproductions of
well-known fragrances. Their company is the Lornamead
Group, which was founded in 1978 and is based in Dubai
but has affiliated offices in London, Dublin, Moscow,
Lagos, Johannesburg, Holland and Scandinavia. They
have revived traditional brands such as Harmony hairspray,
Boymist and Stergene fabric conditioner. The Jatania’s
have two British based companies and have a net gain
of £22 million this year largely due to the
flotation of EPIC Brand Investments on the stock exchange.
Tom Singh
Is founder and director of New Look Plc. – one
of the UK’s largest female fashion retailers,
which has recently expanded to male clothing too.
The business was first established in 1969 and by
1986 was a successful chain of 25 shops. It was first
floated on the London Stock Exchange in June 1998.
And by 2000 the company had expanded to over 500 stored
and a monumental turnover of £418 million.
Meena Pathak
She is the Director of Product Development of one
of the most successful food companies in the country,
Patak’s. The company opened its first food processing
factory in Lancashire in 2000, and now exports to
over 40 countries worldwide.
Perween Warsi
Started off by making and selling samosas from her
home in Derby, but has since established her own company,
S&A Foods, which employs 1300 people in four factories
and has an annual turnover of £100 million.
She’s been dubbed the ‘Samosa Queen’
and the ‘Curry Queen’. Recently Perween
expanded to supplying British supermarkets with Malaysian,
Thai and Chinese foods.
