The UK population: by ethnic
group, April 2001
The size of the minority ethnic population was 4.6
million in 2001 or 7.9% of the total population of
the United Kingdom. Half of the total minority ethnic
population were Asians of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi
or other Asian origin. Indians were the largest minority
group, followed by Pakistanis.

The majority of all ethnic minority
populations are concentrated in the large urban centres.
More than half of the Bangladeshi community (54%)
live in London. Other groups have been more dispersed.
Only 19% of Pakistanis reside in London, 21% have
taken up residence in the West Midlands, 20% in Yorkshire
and the Humber, and 16% in the North West.
