Age distribution: by ethnic group, 2001/02

Minority ethnic groups have a younger age structure than the White population, reflecting past immigration and fertility patterns. From the Asian community the Bangladeshi group had the youngest age structure, with 38% aged under 16.

This was double the proportion of the White group where only 19% were under the age of 16. Progressive ageing of the minority ethnic population is anticipated in the future, but changes will depend on fertility levels, mortality rates and future net migration.
