I can't adopt - I'm
gay
Not true
There is nothing in law that prevents gay people from
adopting children.
However adoption agencies can make subjective decisions
about a person's suitability based on lifestyle. And
in many cases public pressure means that homosexuals,
whether single or in established permanent relationships,
may find it harder to be accepted by an adoption agency.
However, changes are afoot. In 1999, a leading national
adoption agency, The Children’s Society, changed
its policy on homosexual adopters.
And Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, the head of family
courts in England and Wales, threw her support behind
gay couples who wanted to adopt children.
She said: "It would be quite wrong when looking
at the welfare of the child
not to recognise that different children will need
different types of parents."
The government however is expected to change the law
in the near future to give equal adoption rights to
all un-married couples. This would include gay couples.
