Yancy
Butler grew up in Manhattans Greenwich Village,
New York City, raised by father Joe Butler, lead
singer and drummer of the Lovin’ Spoonful and
Leslie Butler, a company manager for Broadway
shows. Acting was a natural career choice for
Yancy, having a family working in show biz, including
her grandparents who were involved in theatre.
She landed her first movie role in 1977, a small
part in the thriller Savage Weekend. From the
age of 13 she studied at prominent HB Studios
in New York City, as well as taking dance and
ballet classes at Joffrey and Ailey schools. She
then attended the Sarah Lawrence College, where
she graduated in 1991 with a bachelor degree in
Liberal Arts.
Fresh from college, with a great deal of experience
in theatrical work, Yancy got a guest-starring
role on the critically acclaimed hit series Law
& Order. Series creator, Dick Wolf, then offered
her a lead role in the sci-fi series Mann &
Machine. Although building up a fan base and receiving
cult status, the series was unsuccessful and was
pulled after only 9 episodes. Before starring
in another Dick Wolf series production, South
Beach, Yancy got her first leading part in a full
length film, 1993s The Hit List.
