Her story may read like a modern-day Cinderella
tale, but rising star Rosario Dawson is firmly
grounded in reality. This actress still lives
where she spent most of her formative years: right
here in a homestead building that was abandoned
by the city but made over by its unofficial residents
with their own sweat. And it was here, too, within
the urban melting pot of downtown Manhattan, that
Rosario Dawson was discovered. It's a one-in-a-million
Cinderella story: One hot summer afternoon four
years ago, a writer-director catches sight of
a teenager sitting on the stoop of a building.
It's the same tenement her own mother helped make
livable years before-maybe that's why she seems
so at ease there. She's a mix of Cuban, Puerto
Rican, Native American, African American, and
Irish blood, and it shows: such an open face,
so wide-eyed, with a full smile. She's the real
thing, so the director decides to cast her in
a documentary-style movie: Larry Clark's Kids.
